Episode 278: Full Metal Donatello!

Greetings Turtletarians!

Welcome to our live stream recording of Turtle Soup Podcast Episode 278! On this episode we review the 1996 Image Comics Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vol. 3 issue #4 and we take a look at some possible concept art images and information for the forthcoming TMNT animated movie due out in 2023!

First of all, we’d like to make it absolutely clear that the views and opinions of websites that we cite do not necessarily reflect those of Turtle Soup as a whole or its individual hosts. Furthermore, the site that we reference in this episode for our news segment absolutely does NOT reflect the views and opinions of Turtle Soup as a whole or its individual hosts.

So… news!

It’s being reported that at an investor meeting for Paramount, it was discussed that they are planning on orchestrating a new wave of Turtle mania to hit around 2023. Their plan is to have a Seth Rogen led TMNT animated movie, theatrically released and then followed by a series of Nickelodeon produced animated movies focusing on individual TMNT villains to be released on Paramount +.

Rogen has been quoted, saying that he wants to really emphasize the “Teenage” aspect of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Which is a point we here at Turtle Soup like to remind people of often.

Along with this information, some concept art images were released presumably for the upcoming film. These concept images show the four TMNT (Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Donatello and Raphael) on a roof top. One image has the four Turtles opening a pizza box from the point of view of the pizza about to be eaten. The next image has the four Ninja Turtles eating said pizza while we see a myriad of things happening in the city scape behind them.

On the left, we see a giant whale covered in various other sea creatures walking through the city. Then there’s the Turtle Blimp floating through the sky and just to the right of that we see two flying creatures that closely resemble Wingnut and Screwloose. Below them, standing on a water tower, appears to be a character in armor and a cape that’s not too far from the stylings of The Shredder. To the right of that character, is what looks to be a different take on the Technodrome.

This Technodrome design is great! It’s essentially a giant yellow eye ball incased in a metal apparatus that allows it to roll around. Then to the right of that we see a character that sort of looks like the character Dogpound from the 2012 Nickelodeon TMNT animated series, just shooting a bunch of pink lasers in the sky.

The TMNT themselves have a few things to their designs. First of all, they’re all very lean with very similar builds, as opposed to their appearances in Rise of the TMNT. Raphael has a full skull cap bandana and some battle damage to his shell. Leonardo has braces for some reason. Michaelangelo looks like Michaelangelo. And the one Turtle that seems to always get the most design accents, Donatello, gets a bucked tooth, thick rimmed glasses and massive headphones hanging from his neck.

Overall, these designs are pretty cool and the art design is a neat painted claymation style that we dig.

Moving on to the meat of the episode: Image Comic’s 1996 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vol. 3 issue 4!

The Turtles finally found Donnie but it appears that something else got there first and devoured him leaving only his skeleton and shell behind. Upon closer inspection, Leo realizes that this skeleton has 5 fingers and toes (where the TMNT have 3 fingers and 2 toes) and deduce that their Donatello is in another castle. Nevertheless, that’s still his shell there and he couldn’t live without it so they presume that Donnie is dead one way or the other. They take his shell and head for Lord Komodo’s palace.

In Komodo’s palace, Make tries to eat Splinter to no avail, all the while Lord Komodo is in pain and transforms into an actual komodo dragon. At this point, his “brothers” (the other Komodo dragons we saw previously) come in and attack Mako. By this point Lord Komodo’s assistant, Pimiko and her kunoichi show up and Mako takes off followed by the Komodo dragons.

The turtles bury Don in the woods outside the palace and head through the cornfield separating them from the palace. They are blindsided by Mako trying to escape and he steals their flying car but Raphael uses the remote control to get it back and dump Mako out.

Then we get some narration from Donatello who recalls the events of the Cyborg that fell out of the helicopter with him, crawling over to his paralyzed body and doing something. He blacks out and wakes up later thinking he’s being carried by the cyborg through the corn fields but turns out he had been assimilated and is now half robot half turtle all ninja cyborg!

Episode 277: Tomayko, Tomahko!

Greetings Turtletarians!

Welcome to our live stream recording of episode 277 of Turtle Soup Podcast! On this episode we review the 1996 Image Comics Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vol. 3 issue 3! On top of that we have fresh news regarding Splinter being announced as the newest playable character for the forthcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Shredder’s Revenge, video game!

We start things off with taking a look at the TMNT – Shredder’s Revenge video game trailer revealing none other than Master Splinter as another playable character!

Splinter looks fantastic and appears to be based on his 1987 Animated Series appearance.

Following the news we get into the real meat of the episode! Our review of the 1996 Image Comics Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vol. 3 Issue 3!

This issue opens with Donnie making his decent from Pimiko’s helicopter to the ground below and hoping for the best. Then we see Pimiko deliver Master Splinter to Lord Go-komodo the Dragon Lord’s palace. Followed by her presumably killing the remaining cyborg brute that accompanied her to the TMNT’s lair in issue one. She stabs him through the throat and then tosses him over to a caged shark man named Mako, who begrudgingly feasts on the half man half machine.

Splinter is able to make one last trip to the astral plane to direct Leonardo in the direction of home as he’s been lost since Donnie left him there alone. Splinter makes an ominous remark about beings on the astral plane that want Leo’s fear or something like that. Splinter is brought before Lord Go-Komodo and has his ninja status tested to Lord Go-Komodo’s delight. Splinter, ever the gentleman, wins Lord Go-Komodo’s respect and the two have a very lengthy intelligent conversation. Lord Go-Komodo explains that he’s looking for mutants that can unleash the beasts within as to unlock the dragon beast within himself.

Back with the Turtles, Pimiko and her Kunoichi are attacking Leo, Raph and Mikey in their newly set up lair in the graveyard. Leo is still out of commission as he’s still on the astral plane peacefully sitting there unaware of what’s happening around him. Raph quickly leaves Mikey to deal with the rest of the kunoichi while he takes on Pimiko one on one and divided they fall. As Pimiko starts to gloat over her victory, Leonardo wakes up and kicks ass and the female ninjas depart. Mike and Raph want to follow them but Leo says he knows where Donatello is and so Raphael runs to get a Triceraton flying car ship thing that Donnie had been working on and they make there way to the city to find Don.

While Splinter and Lord Go-Komodo are making their way through the palace and talking, they start to smell blood and death in the air. Then we see that the smell is coming from the mouth of the aforementioned shark man Mako who attacks them.

Back with the TMNT, they find the spot where Don should be and after searching a bit they find that all that remains is Donnie’s skeleton.

What did you think of seeing a TMTN’s skeleton?

Did you like how Splinter was handled this issue?

Do you think that Raphael actually has a thing for Pimiko?

Lettuce know!

Episode 276: The 10th Hole!

Greetings Turtletarians!

On this thrilling 276th episode of Turtle Soup Podcast, we cover the 1996 Image Comics Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vol 3. Issue 2!

In this issue, we catch up with Donatello who is still falling from the helicopter after escaping his captors. He ends up tussling with the cyborg who fell out with him and that ends in him accidentally triggering his gun that hits him in the head. Leaving Donnie to continue the rest of the fall to the city street below alone.

We follow the helicopter to this palace that appears to be the headquarters of the Dragonlord. Pimiko and the remaining cyborg take the now unconscious Splinter and place him in a cell within the headquarters. We’re then introduced to a character who is a shark man type creature named Mako. Mako and the cyborg get into an argument and Pimiko ends up stabbing the cyborg in the throat and placing him near Mako’s cage and encourages him to eat to his hearts content.

We then see Leonardo, Michaelangelo and Raphael relocating their lair since their previous lair has been compromised by a new enemy. They end up inside of a mausoleum in a graveyard that they decide to use for a new lair. Michaelangelo is tasked with looking on the internet for any information about this so called Dragonlord. Raphael heads out to source some information from his contacts in the Foot Clan. Before he leaves tho, Leonardo gifts him one of Casey Jones’ old hockey masks to cover his now scarred face. Then Leo proceeds to attempt to achieve transcendence to the astral plane in hopes of contacting Splinter.

As Raphael makes his exit we see that they are not the only beings alive in the graveyard, as one of Pimiko’s kuniochi named Angel is keeping tabs on the TMNT and informing her boss on their situation. Cut to Pimiko who is in the presence of the infamous Dragonlord! Who she just informed that the cyborgs we saw last issue and the beginning of this issue are a waste of money as they are insubordinate and incompetent. With this new information, the Dragonlord is on the phone cancelling all funding of any cyborg tech.

The rest of the scene is very similar to every story ever told about Marvel Comics Wolverine and his time with Weapon X and basically his adamantium origins. Only, instead of Marvel Comics Wolverine, we get a character called “The Weasel” who turns out to be a mutant and not an anthropromorphic creature. The Dragonlord has no interest in this being and as a result, The Weasel attempts to attack The Dragonlord but is beheaded by Pimiko. She then proceeds to inform The Dragonlord of the TMNT’s situation and is told to attempt to capture one of the other turtles since she lost Donatello.

Raphael returns to the new lair and picks on Leo for trying to get to the astral plane. Then Raphael goes over to Mikey to compare notes and they find out that there is some land associated with the Dragonlord and this coincides with what they know of the location that Splinter described being taken to and Raphael’s intel from his connect in the Foot. They go to tell Leo of their findings but he has now actually ascended to the astral plane.

Leo upon arriving in the astral plane is greeted by Donatello who has also managed to make it there. They converse and Leo follows Don to where is physical body is. Turns out that Donatello landed on his shell and has no feeling below his neck. Its at this point that Raphael gets 3 shurikens in his shell and we find out that Pimiko and her Kuniochi have invaded their new lair and can’t get Leo out of his trance.

  • What do you think of the Dragonlord and his experiments?
  • Are you a fan of anthropomorphic Sharks?
  • Do you like your vigilantes masked or unmasked?
  • Do you like when the TMNT have to change lairs?
  • Are you a fan of the astral plane?

Episode 275: Hero With a Half face!

Greetings Turtletarians!

Welcome to the live stream recording of Episode 275 of Turtle Soup Podcast! On this thrilling episode we begin our deep dive on the wildly divisive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Comics Vol. 3 from Image Comics!

This is something we’ve been looking forward to since the beginning of the show. This time in TMNT history is when I think a lot of fans who grew up with the cartoon began to find other interest catch their eyes and divert them from their evergreen true loves. This is probably why an effort was made to make this series more of a “risk taking” run on the Turtles comics. This is also akin to when your favorite unsigned band gets signed to a record deal with “major” indie label. Image Comics was that label that carried so much promise, but as we comic fans well know, “with great power comes great responsibility” and the TMNT were a powerhouse property to be responsible for.

For their first official full on take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Image comics went with black and white interiors. This is a well treaded path for the TMNT and oddly enough works surprising well for them. The art is very nice and cool but suffers with so much detail that its kinda hard to read or make out what you’re actually looking at. This issue pulls no punches. First page is a splash page of Donatello being blasted by an explosion during a birthday party thrown by Splinter for his sons the TMNT. We soon find that this takes place in the lair and the party is being crashed by violent cyborgs. The turtles are quick to make jokes as well as subdue at least one of the cyborgs. Then a mysterious woman clad in warrior leather attire with a syringe gun that was apparently used on Master Splinter leaving him incapacitated and has a knife to his throat. We find out her name is Pimiko and she seems to be the leader of this cyborg militia. The intruders take off with Donatello and Splinter and head to the street. The rest of the TMNT follow to find that the cyborgs and Pimiko have a helicopter and take off with Spinter and Donatello. Eventually, Donatello wakes up after having a fever dream about the birthday party that preceded his current status. Upon waking up he quickly makes a frantic escape to find that he was in a helicopter and now is plummeting back to the earth. Thankfully he’s not alone and managed to knock one of the cyborgs out with him. Back with the rest of the TMNT in the lair, they start investigating the remains of one of the cyborgs that was left behind. Apparently, its still functioning and right before Raphael smashes it even further, it manages to plasma blast Raphael in the face. Then we see that while this was transpiring, Splinter took a trip on the astral plane and visits his son Leonardo. Splinter explains the situation to Leo and then Pimiko notices that “the rat” is apparently a high level ranking ninja master and is on the astral plane. Splinter bids farewell to his son as he is discovered and presumably knocked unconscious. And that’s issue 1 of vol. 3 of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from Image Comics.

  • Were you a fan of this first issue?
  • Do you prefer your TMNT in black and white or colorized?
  • Do you rock the “top knot?”
  • Were cyborgs over used in the 90s or not enough?
  • Were you reading any other Image comics back in the day?

Episode 274: Duck, Duck, Gus!

Greetings Turtletarians!

Welcome to our live streamed recording of Turtle Soup Podcast Episode 274! On this thrilling episode, we’ll be taking another bold step in the journey of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by reviewing Image Comics’ Casey Jones / Raphael – Bodycount issue 4!

First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We made it through one more year and we couldn’t have done it without your support. Thank you again for listening, watching, commenting, live chatting, emailing, friending, following, liking, sharing, subscribing, and any other way you’ve supported the show this past year.

A special thanks to our wonderfully patient and encouraging Patreon supporters. Ya’ll are the wind beneath our shells.

So, here we are, the finale of our first foray into the dark and strange new world of Image Comics version of the TMNT, aka: Vol. 3! This brief introduction to TMNT Vol. 3 has been an interesting one.

This last chapter finds our friends Casey Jones and Raphael still amidst the chaotic conflict between Johnny Woo Woo, Martin and his sanctuary followers, Lord Dong from Hong Kong’s men, and Midnight. If you’re confused, don’t worry, we were too.

So, basically… Lord Dong is the mastermind behind all these different gangs. Then Martin decides that he wants to do things differently and forms a new hierarchy of power within the gangs called Sanctuary. Midnight gets set up and Lord Dong puts a hit out on her with Johnny Woo Woo. On the run to find Sanctuary, Midnight runs into our heroes and they proceed to assist her on her journey. After countless dead bodies, bullets and blood, our protagonists make it to Martin’s house but they are not the only ones as Johnny Woo Woo and Agent Choy (a detective who is assisting with this gang violence case) are also in the vicinity.

All of this culminates in Raphael taking up some guns and developing a more love than hate relationship with these weapons whereas Casey Jones maintains his distaste for them. Raphael thinks that Casey took a bullet to the chest and killed him. In his grief we see a side of Raphael that is refreshing considering his newfound love of the honorless weapons of destruction that now have possibly killed his best friend. Thankfully, Casey Jones had a golden puck necklace that blocked the bullet.

Martin explains to everyone the setup situation and then proceeds to preside of Johnny Woo Woo and Midnight fighting it out to the death. Everything comes to a head with most everyone escaping the building right as it explodes. Casey Jones and Raphael say their goodbye to Midnight who thanks them for their assistance.

Choy and Hector become hotdog merchants. Hong Kong Dong gets a Fedex package with a message from Choy containing one of the cybernetic hands of the late Johnny Woo Woo, letting him know that his plan has failed.

And that’s about it.

  • What did you think of Bodycount?
  • Do you appreciate the “blocked bullet” trope or is it cheesy?
  • What did you want to see more of in this book?
