Greetings Turtletarians!

On this thrilling episode of Turtle Soup, we continue on through 1996 and take a look at Archie Adventure Series’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures – The Year Of The Turtle comic 3 parter! We thought we were completely done with TMNT Adventures but Archie had one more story line for us and its a doozy.

The story revolves around a father telling a child the tale of the last TMNT adventure. This adventure begins with both Splinter and the TMNT as well as Shredder and his new friends T.K.O., Psonic, and Cyberious attempting to acquire as much information about the location of 3 pieces of an ancient talisman that is said to give its bearer the ability to reshape the world however they choose. However, this attribute of the talisman is only fully activated once in a life time by the planets and stars all aligning to make a turtle and shooting a beam of energy down to a precise location on Earth where the bearer of the combined talisman must be in order to use it to its full capacity. This is no easy task, the Turtles have to use all their varied strengths to find any clues to the locations need to bring all this together in time. Along with Shredder’s new allies, the TMNT will have to overcome the combined forces of Mother Nature, Killer Monks, Himalayan Temple Booby Traps, and a group of young actors with attitude portraying this universe’s take on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! Written by Dan Slott and featuring art that is evocative of typical Marvel/DC comics from the mid 90’s, this story has most everything we could ask for and yet still left us wanting more.

  • What did you think of Shredder’s new allies?
  • Which team would you rather be a reserve member of, TMNT or MMPR?
  • Do you prefer your TMNT babyfaced, bearded or mustached?
  • Have you ever used a Turtle as a snow sled before?
  • Do you think that “talkin’ tech” is greater than “does machines?”
  • Do you often use the phrase “caught them with their pants down” as often as 90’s comics wants us to believe that people do?

Well that’s it for this stacked episode! Join us next week as we head back to Japan and review the Mutant Turtles: Superman Legend OVA and Sound Track!

Greetings Turtletarians!

On this 258th episode of Turtle Soup, we take a look at the final two issues of the collected Mutant Turtles Gaiden Comic published by Dengeki Comics, written by Hiroshi Kanno and translated into English by the Optical Internet Translation Gang. Also, Adam Winters (the provider of the raw files) even makes a surprise guest appearance in the chat and adds a spoon full of extra insight to these issues!

In issue 3, now knowing Splinter is still alive and continuously finding himself at odds with the TMNT and their friend April O’Neil, The Shredder decides to call for the big guns! And guns we mean all the guns! As a result of his successful theft of the Jewel of the Nile in issue 2, the Foot Clan have managed to open a portal to Dimension X and bring forth the aforementioned “big guns” in the form of what we in the states would commonly recognize as “The Technodrome,” but now featuring an autonomous “daruma doll” head replacing the garish eye ball and is here referred to as “THE DEVIL’S MONSTER!!!” We also get to see more of Rocksteady and a badass impractical hotrod version of a transport module!

In issue 4, The Shredder makes one final attempt at ending the Turtles once and for all by way of a mysterious ancient Japanese sword known as the “Muramasa Blade.” This blade has an unexplainable effect on the human mind that causes it to be “possessed” until it accomplishes its goals. This can only happen once every 100 years and of course, this year is the 100th year so The Foot Clan are headed to Japan. However, they aren’t slumming it on an airplane like the Turtles eventually will… no, they embark on this globe trotting journey in the comfort of… THE DEVIL’S SUBMARINE!!! This thing is fantastic! Its soooo super villainy that anything less than this should be a felony (sorry bad Ice Ice Baby pun/reference). Its basically a submarine that has fins like a whale and the same if not similar daruma doll head we last saw on the technodrome or better yet… THE DEVIL’S MONSTER!!! As mentioned earlier, the Turtles and Splinter make their way to Japan as well due to a strange calling Splinter received. Also, it just so happens that Channel 6 is doing a report on the ancient Japanese armory show where the Muramasa sword is showcased and they sent none other than April O’Neil and Irma to cover the case! Can Shredder and the Foot Clan beat the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their friends to the highly desired mysterious ancient sword showcase and use its strange abilities to enact their evil plan?

We also FINALLY get to play a video review of the Australian Pizza Hut Specialty TMNT Green Mutagen Ranch Pizza that was expertly crafted and delivered to us by our down under correspondent Mike Hatfield!

And lastly, we take a look at the new Neca TMNT action figure reveals/news from Neca Con! Filled to the brim with Turtle goodness this episode!

Be sure to check back next week as we dive back into some TMNT Adventures and a story called “Year of the Turtle!”

Episode 257: Full Frontal Phony Turtle Taint!

Greetings Turtletarians!

On this episode of Turtle Soup Podcast we take a look at the Japanese only release of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic entitled “Mutant Turtle Gaiden” published by Dengeki Comics, written by Hiroshi Kanno and translated into English by the Optical Internet Translation Gang. This release was released back in the December of 1994 and collected in one volume. We’ll be discussing issues 3 and 4 next episode. These stories are basically retellings of the Turtles first encounters with Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang as well as April O’Neil and the Channel 6 news team!

Issue 1 has very similar beats to the 1987 cartoon’s first few episodes and the 1990 live action movie. We get introduced to April O’Neil who has a run in with The Foot Clan which results in her being saved by the TMNT in one of their first ventures out of the sewer. Shredder has a Weather Control Device like most villains who plan on world domination. He also has a unique penchant for pontificating on and on about Hell.

Issue 2 continues with Shredders attempts at world domination taking a back seat to finding a way to deal with the TMNT so that they cannot stand in his way. In typical 80’s villain fashion, Shredder brings out his phony mecha turtles to frame our heroes for crimes they didn’t commit in order to have the city they’re trying to protect turn against them. This plan almost works but is just barely subverted by Bebop and Rocksteady’s mission to acquire The Jewel of the Nile, an integral piece to Shredders plan!

The art in these issues are great however some decisions were made that left us questioning a lot of things and hence the title of the episode. I’ll leave it at that for now.

We also discuss some TMNT Toy News!

Episode 256: Waterbed Coptoonalingus!

Greetings everyone!

On this episode we make a triumphant return to reviewing comics in the way of:

  • TMNT/Savage Dragon Crossover #1
  • Savage Dragon #22
  • TMNT/Savage Dragon Playmates Toys Mini Comic
  • TMNT/Creed #1.

Crossovers are nothing new to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They are a rare property that seems to blend seamlessly within any environment you introduce them to. However, the Savage Dragon universe is no stranger to the TMNT. They first met back in 1993 when they came together to fight Virago and some gargoyles in Savage Dragon #2 and TMNT/Savage Dragon Crossover #1 (1993).

Now, 2 years later, the TMNT find themselves in the Windy City of Chicago yet again for another tag team fight with Officer Dragon. This time its an antagonist from the TMNT’s universe known as Complete Carnage! We then jump to the year 1996 and review a TMNT/Savage Dragon Mini Comic that was packed in with the Playmates TMNT and Savage Dragon toy lines. The looks of the TMNT in this comic are based on the toys that are themselves based on designs from Jim Lee. Another thing that the TMNT are no stranger to is the comic book trope that any time heroes from different worlds meet, they absolutely must fight before they can team up, and this comic is essentially that scenario.

Finally, we take a look at the TMNT’s team up with a character named Mark from a book called CREED. One of the things I loved about the TMNT in this era is that when they teamed up with other more obscure indy characters, you could almost feel the excitement jumping from the page. This is definitely evident here in this issue of TMNT/CREED. Trent Kaniuga’s take on the Turtles is pure Mirage goodness that left us wanting more!

  • What are your thoughts on the TMNT crossovers?
  • Were you reading Savage Dragon or CREED back in the 90s?
  • What property would you love to see the TMNT crossover with?
  • Is there any property that you think absolutely wouldn’t work as a TMNT crossover?
  • Did you ever own a waterbed or have any waterbed related stories?

Episode 255: Old Melty Helmet and the Soggy Bread Boys!

Welcome to Episode 255 of Turtle Soup Podcast! On this episode we do our best to review the live action stage show titled TMNT Live Auckland, New Zealand 1990. This live show is a collaboration with a New Zealand children’s television programming block called EBS (Early Bird Special?) and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s an officially licensed program from Mirage Studios and was filmed in front of a live audience at the height of Turtle mania. It mashes up elements from the TMNT 1987 Animated Series and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie Soundtrack with lots of dancing, puppets, and crowd participation!

The only real redeeming factor (and main reason for our coverage of this) is that this show features full on live action costumes for Bebop and Rocksteady! After being snubbed by the 90s live action Turtles movies, we felt like it was important enough to mention this brief live appearance of two of our favorite TMNT villains as to our knowledge, this is all they get for this time period of Ninja Turtle hype.

That being said, the actual stage show is very dark to presumably mask some of the costumes short comings. Which is a great idea for those in attendance but makes for an almost irritating TV viewing experience. Luckily, we braved through the almost hour long mire of puppets cracking jokes, children dancing, more puppets playing a strange song about a toxic relationship with a character called “Johnny Lee,” and a ballet that is an interpretive dance version of the 1990 TMNT movie soundtrack cut T.U.R.T.L.E. Power, all so you don’t have to.

  • Did you happen to witness this in person?
  • Why do you think we didn’t have more of these types of shows in the U.S.A.?
  • What did you think of the costumes?

Episode 254: Better Turtles. Better Ninjas. Good Americans!

In this episode we trek through the seldom spoke of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ short film from 1992, paid for by the United States Bureau of Land Management called “The Mystery Of The Cliffs!”

Here the TMNT teach us about the desert, camping, cave dwellings, petroglyphs, custodianship, archaeological theft, and the insurmountable responsibility that U.S. Bureau of Land Management Rangers have to bare in order to maintain our countries historic sites!

Featuring the costumes from the TMNT’s Coming Out Of Their Shells Tour, the voice cast from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1987 animated series, and select scores from the Turtles’ 1990 live action movie. This is the meta mutant mashup we never knew we needed until now!

  • Are you a fan of the TMNT adventures outside of the sewers/city?
  • Do you (like us) wish they had made more Ninja Turtle long form PSAs like this?
  • Did this motivate you to be a better turtle, ninja, and/or American?
  • Did this inspire you to be a more conscious custodian of your surroundings?
  • Do you believe that the astral projection of “Splinter” was actually Splinter or was it his “rat faced dude guy” ancestor from 400 years ago?
  • What are your thoughts on exercise as punishment?
