Greetings Turtletarians!

On this 258th episode of Turtle Soup, we take a look at the final two issues of the collected Mutant Turtles Gaiden Comic published by Dengeki Comics, written by Hiroshi Kanno and translated into English by the Optical Internet Translation Gang. Also, Adam Winters (the provider of the raw files) even makes a surprise guest appearance in the chat and adds a spoon full of extra insight to these issues!

In issue 3, now knowing Splinter is still alive and continuously finding himself at odds with the TMNT and their friend April O’Neil, The Shredder decides to call for the big guns! And guns we mean all the guns! As a result of his successful theft of the Jewel of the Nile in issue 2, the Foot Clan have managed to open a portal to Dimension X and bring forth the aforementioned “big guns” in the form of what we in the states would commonly recognize as “The Technodrome,” but now featuring an autonomous “daruma doll” head replacing the garish eye ball and is here referred to as “THE DEVIL’S MONSTER!!!” We also get to see more of Rocksteady and a badass impractical hotrod version of a transport module!

In issue 4, The Shredder makes one final attempt at ending the Turtles once and for all by way of a mysterious ancient Japanese sword known as the “Muramasa Blade.” This blade has an unexplainable effect on the human mind that causes it to be “possessed” until it accomplishes its goals. This can only happen once every 100 years and of course, this year is the 100th year so The Foot Clan are headed to Japan. However, they aren’t slumming it on an airplane like the Turtles eventually will… no, they embark on this globe trotting journey in the comfort of… THE DEVIL’S SUBMARINE!!! This thing is fantastic! Its soooo super villainy that anything less than this should be a felony (sorry bad Ice Ice Baby pun/reference). Its basically a submarine that has fins like a whale and the same if not similar daruma doll head we last saw on the technodrome or better yet… THE DEVIL’S MONSTER!!! As mentioned earlier, the Turtles and Splinter make their way to Japan as well due to a strange calling Splinter received. Also, it just so happens that Channel 6 is doing a report on the ancient Japanese armory show where the Muramasa sword is showcased and they sent none other than April O’Neil and Irma to cover the case! Can Shredder and the Foot Clan beat the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their friends to the highly desired mysterious ancient sword showcase and use its strange abilities to enact their evil plan?

We also FINALLY get to play a video review of the Australian Pizza Hut Specialty TMNT Green Mutagen Ranch Pizza that was expertly crafted and delivered to us by our down under correspondent Mike Hatfield!

And lastly, we take a look at the new Neca TMNT action figure reveals/news from Neca Con! Filled to the brim with Turtle goodness this episode!

Be sure to check back next week as we dive back into some TMNT Adventures and a story called “Year of the Turtle!”

Episode 257: Full Frontal Phony Turtle Taint!

Greetings Turtletarians!

On this episode of Turtle Soup Podcast we take a look at the Japanese only release of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic entitled “Mutant Turtle Gaiden” published by Dengeki Comics, written by Hiroshi Kanno and translated into English by the Optical Internet Translation Gang. This release was released back in the December of 1994 and collected in one volume. We’ll be discussing issues 3 and 4 next episode. These stories are basically retellings of the Turtles first encounters with Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang as well as April O’Neil and the Channel 6 news team!

Issue 1 has very similar beats to the 1987 cartoon’s first few episodes and the 1990 live action movie. We get introduced to April O’Neil who has a run in with The Foot Clan which results in her being saved by the TMNT in one of their first ventures out of the sewer. Shredder has a Weather Control Device like most villains who plan on world domination. He also has a unique penchant for pontificating on and on about Hell.

Issue 2 continues with Shredders attempts at world domination taking a back seat to finding a way to deal with the TMNT so that they cannot stand in his way. In typical 80’s villain fashion, Shredder brings out his phony mecha turtles to frame our heroes for crimes they didn’t commit in order to have the city they’re trying to protect turn against them. This plan almost works but is just barely subverted by Bebop and Rocksteady’s mission to acquire The Jewel of the Nile, an integral piece to Shredders plan!

The art in these issues are great however some decisions were made that left us questioning a lot of things and hence the title of the episode. I’ll leave it at that for now.

We also discuss some TMNT Toy News!
